First Birthday Decoration Ideas at Home (That Survive a One-Year-Old)

First birthday décor with pink and white balloon arches, a floral wreath and a light-up number one

The best first birthday decorations are built around one photo zone — a backdrop with the baby's name, a balloon garland and a cake table — set up so a curious one-year-old can enjoy it without pulling it down. The birthday child won't remember the party; the photographs are what last. So the effort goes where the camera goes, and the rest of the house just needs to be tidy and safe.

One photo zone, done properly

Pick the wall with the best natural light that isn't a window, and build everything there: a round or arch backdrop with the baby's name, a balloon garland sweeping across one side, and the cake table in front. That one three-metre stretch gives you the family photo, the cake-cutting shots and every guest's selfie. Decorating every room with the same budget gives you none of them.

Make it toddler-proof

A one-year-old will head straight for the most colourful thing in the room, so plan for it.

  • Keep balloons out of reach. Latex balloons and the pieces of popped balloons are a choking hazard for young children. Mount garlands high on the backdrop, pick up broken balloons immediately, and don't leave loose balloons on the floor.
  • Weight or secure everything freestanding. Backdrop frames and balloon stands need sandbags or weights — a toddler pulling themselves up on a frame is a certainty.
  • No small loose décor at floor level. Confetti, scatter gems and small props on low tables end up in mouths.
  • Skip real candles on the cake table until the moment you light the one on the cake.

The name and the number

A first birthday is the one party where the number is the star. A giant light-up marquee "1" beside the cake table photographs beautifully, day or night, and it's one of the easiest pieces to hire. Pair it with the baby's name on the backdrop — a vinyl decal or acrylic sign — and you have the two elements every guest will photograph.

Palettes that photograph well

Soft palettes suit a baby: blush, cream and gold; sage, white and natural rattan; butter yellow and white; or powder blue with navy accents. Keep it to one base colour, one accent and one metallic. If you've chosen a theme — teddy bears, hot air balloons, clouds, a garden — let the backdrop carry it and keep the rest simple.

A cake smash corner

If you're planning a cake smash, give it its own spot away from the main backdrop: a washable mat or drop sheet, a simple mini backdrop and the smash cake at floor level. It keeps the main photo zone clean for family photos and gives the photographer somewhere easy to shoot the mess.

Home, or a hired hall?

Most first birthdays we style are at home, where a single backdrop and cake table fill a living area comfortably. For bigger guest lists, families hire a community hall — check its opening hours and rules on balloons and wall fixings before you plan the décor, because they vary a lot between councils. We cover what to expect in areas like Clyde North and Craigieburn.

Hire it, or have it styled

Backdrops, arch frames, light-up marquee numbers and props are all in our DIY hire catalogue. Or we can set the whole thing up and take it away afterwards — see birthday party decor hire. For a baby shower before the big day, see our baby shower decoration ideas.

First birthday decoration FAQs

When should we set up first birthday decorations?

The morning of the party, or the evening before for everything except balloons and fresh flowers. Air-filled balloon garlands look their best for a day or two, so build or install them as close to the party as you can.

Are balloons safe at a first birthday party?

They can be, with care. Latex balloons and the pieces of popped balloons are a choking hazard for young children, so keep garlands mounted high, collect broken balloons straight away and don't leave loose balloons on the floor.

How big should the backdrop be?

A backdrop around 1.5 to 2 metres wide suits most living rooms and frames the birthday child and parents comfortably. Leave a metre of clear floor in front so people can stand in it for photos.

Can we hire a light-up number one for the party?

Yes. Light-up marquee numbers are in our hire catalogue, along with backdrops, arch frames and props, and we can deliver them or style the full set-up.
