Most Melbourne mandap quotes land in one of three tiers. Names vary between decorators, but the structure of the market is consistent:
A standard four-pillar or arch frame with fabric draping and modest artificial florals. Usually DIY-adjacent: delivered and installed, but without aisle styling, seating or elaborate floral work. Right for smaller ceremonies, at-home weddings and couples watching the budget closely.
Where most bookings sit. The structure plus proper drapery in your ceremony colours, a substantial floral treatment (usually high-quality artificial, sometimes mixed with fresh), entrance or aisle styling, and ceremony seating for the couple and priest. Installation and pack-down included.
Fresh florals are the main driver at this tier — a fully fresh-dressed mandap can carry a florist's day of work inside it. Add larger structures for high-ceilinged ballrooms, full aisle and stage styling, and custom builds to match a specific reference photo, and quotes climb past $5,000. Nothing at this tier is a rip-off; you're paying for flowers and labour that genuinely exist.
1. Fresh versus artificial florals. The single biggest lever. Fresh flowers cost more to buy, take hours longer to install, and die — so they're purchased new for every wedding. High-quality artificial florals photograph beautifully at normal viewing distances and can halve the floral component of a quote. Any honest decorator will tell you which their quote assumes; make sure you know.
2. Structure size and venue ceiling height. A mandap for a community hall with 3-metre ceilings is a different build to one filling a ballroom with 6-metre ceilings. Bigger structure, more fabric, more florals, more crew time. If your venue is grand, budget for the mandap to scale with it.
3. What "includes" actually includes. The same headline price can mean very different things. Check whether the quote covers ceremony seating, aisle and entrance styling, delivery, installation and pack-down — pack-down is the one most often quietly excluded, and it's the one you'll care about at 11pm.
4. Bump-in windows and same-day turnarounds. If your venue only allows access two hours before the ceremony, or the room has to be flipped for the reception straight after, the decorator needs more crew to do the same work faster. Tight windows cost more than generous ones.
5. Distance and access. Within metropolitan Melbourne most decorators (us included) don't charge travel. Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula venues usually carry a travel fee. Stairs, lifts and long carries from the loading dock add crew time, which some quotes pass on.
6. The date. Peak-season Saturdays book out first and discount last. If your dates are flexible, a Friday or Sunday ceremony sometimes buys real negotiating room — and a winter wedding almost always does.
Ask whether the florals in the quote are fresh, artificial or mixed — and ask to see photos of their artificial florals, because quality varies enormously. Ask what happens if the venue's access window changes. Ask whether the price changes if your guest count does. And ask to see a mandap they've built at a venue like yours — a decorator who's worked your venue's ceiling heights and access already has solved half the problems your wedding will present.

The trade-off is that dressing a mandap well is genuinely skilled work, and an amateur-dressed frame photographs like one. If budget is tight, a smaller professionally dressed mandap usually beats a large DIY one.
They can double the floral component of a quote. Fresh flowers are bought new per wedding, installed on the day by skilled hands, and are at their best for hours rather than weeks. Many couples split the difference: fresh florals at eye level and photograph height, artificial higher up where nobody can tell.
For a peak-season Saturday, 6–12 months ahead is normal and earlier is safer. Off-peak dates and weekdays can often be booked within a few months. Short-notice bookings do happen when calendars allow — it always costs nothing to ask.
